Netherlands Work Permit: How to Get Hired from Abroad

In the Netherlands, the "Work Permit" is not a single document you apply for at a desk. It is a status granted through various residence titles. For most high-skilled workers, this means the Highly Skilled Migrant (HSM) visa or the Single Permit (GVVA).

1. The Gateway: Finding a "Recognized Sponsor"

The single most important rule for 2026: You cannot sponsor yourself. To hire from abroad without a grueling "labor market test" (proving no EU citizen can do the job), a Dutch company must be a Recognized Sponsor with the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service).

  1. Why it matters: Recognized sponsors can skip the 5-week vacancy advertising rule and get your visa approved in 2–4 weeks rather than 3 months.
  2. How to find them: Check the official IND Public Register of Recognized Sponsors. If a company isn't on this list, your chances of a work permit are significantly lower.

2. 2026 Salary Thresholds (Updated)

Your job offer must meet specific gross monthly salary requirements (excluding the 8% holiday allowance). As of January 1, 2026, the thresholds are:

CategoryGross Monthly Salary (2026)
Highly Skilled Migrant (30+ years old)€5,942
Highly Skilled Migrant (Under 30 years old)€4,357
Reduced Threshold (Recent Graduates)€3,122
EU Blue Card (Standard)€5,942

Note: The "Reduced Threshold" applies if you apply within 3 years of graduating from a top 200 global university or a Dutch institution.

3. 🇮🇳 For Indian Applicants

Indian professionals, particularly in IT and Engineering, are the largest group of HSM holders in the Netherlands.

The VFS Global Process

In India, the Dutch embassy uses VFS Global to collect biometrics and documents.

  1. New Delhi Update: As of January 19, 2026, the VFS Visa Application Centre in New Delhi has relocated. Ensure you check the latest address on your appointment letter.
  2. Booking: You must book a National Visa (MVV) appointment. Slots for HSM applicants are generally prioritized, but during peak seasons (June–August), wait times can reach 3 weeks.

Document Checklist for India

  1. Apostilled Birth Certificate: Your birth certificate must be apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
  2. Degree Recognition: Most Indian IITs and NITs are recognized (H+ on Anabin). If your college is not, you may need a Nuffic evaluation.
  3. Passport Validity: Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity from the date the MVV sticker is placed.

4. 🇵🇭 For Filipino Applicants

For Filipino workers, the process is a "dual-gate" system: you must satisfy both the Dutch IND and the Philippine DMW.

The DMW (Department of Migrant Workers) Hurdle

Even with a Dutch visa, you cannot legally leave the Philippines without an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC).

  1. Direct Hire Ban: The Philippines generally bans "direct hiring" unless the employer is verified. Your Dutch employer must submit their contract for verification to the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Berlin or Prague (covering the Netherlands).
  2. Exemptions: Professionals with high salaries (like HSM visa holders) can often apply for a "Direct Hire Exemption" at the DMW office in Mandaluyong.

Mandatory Medical & PDOS

  1. You must undergo a medical exam at a DMW-accredited clinic.
  2. You must attend a Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) to learn about your rights as an OFW in the Netherlands.

5. The 30% Tax Ruling (2026 Status)

If you are recruited from more than 150km away from the Dutch border (which applies to all Indian and Filipino applicants), you may qualify for the 30% Ruling.

  1. Benefit: Your employer can provide 30% of your gross salary tax-free.
  2. 2026 Rule: The 30% rate remains stable for 2026. However, be aware that legislation is set to decrease this to 27% starting January 1, 2027. Applying now locks in the higher rate for your initial period.

6. Arriving in the Netherlands: BSN & Registration

Once your MVV is in your passport:

  1. Travel to the NL: You have 90 days to enter.
  2. Register at the Gemeente: Within 5 days of arrival, visit the local Town Hall to get your BSN (Citizen Service Number). This is required for your bank account and salary payments.
  3. TB Test: Unless exempt, you must visit the GGD (Public Health Service) for a tuberculosis test within 3 months.
